Stewart Linford—Keynote speaker
Stewart Linford, the well-known local furniture craftsman was the main speaker of the workshop. He explained how he started his furniture business in High Wycombe, after being brought up in Kent, drawn to the town because of its reputation for quality furniture manufacture. He studied at the High Wycombe College of Art and Technology, as Bucks New University was then known, before setting up business in a former pig shed. As his business expanded he moved to larger premises in Kitchener Road, where he is now based.
Stewart then went on to explain the structure of a Windsor chair (a chair built with a solid wooden seat into which the chair-back and legs are pushed into drilled holes, in contrast to standard chairs, where the back legs and the uprights of the back are continuous). He brought a couple of example chairs with him: a children’s chair and one of his limited edition chairs. The limited edition chair was made to commemorate Isambard Kingdom Brunel and includes features from a number of his engineering feats such as the arch of Maidenhead Railway Bridge in the back.
